Steve Gray

Trading Director, Lloyds Pharmacy

Portrait of Steve Gray

Steve Gray is Trading Director of Lloydspharmacy and is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of the Lloydspharmacy service propositions to the customer, the product buying, the clinical service development, the property management and how the brand is presented and marketed to the customer.

The journey to the Lloydspharmacy Board has for Steve been a varied and sometimes a demanding one, furnishing him with the broad range of skills that constantly inform his working life. He embarked on his career in the financial function of Britvic Soft Drinks Limited based in Chelmsford, Essex, Steve’s home town. He soon realised that it was not his destiny to be an accountant, and he left to open his own retail and wholesale business – a business which he ran extremely effectively for over seven years before selling it on to a national company. The ambition to successfully create his own business had been fulfilled, giving Steve much invaluable experience. He then moved to Our Price / WHSmith where he had a number of roles within the Operations, HR, Logistics and Business Development functions. This culminated in him designing and implementing a new operating model which moved decision making closer to the customer and delivered differential profit growth. In 2002 Steve left WHSmith to join the multi-brand, multi-channel company Retail Variations, as the Group HR and Stores Director. Working in this Venture Capitalist backed environment was enlightening and informative; it offered yet another business experience, and a useful contrast to his previous working environments.

In early 2004 Steve was approached to join Lloydspharmacy and joined the business as Regional Manager of the South West of England. The first six months proved to be an intensive learning curve, as Steve immediately identified that a comprehensive understanding of the pharmacy industry, and community pharmacy in particular, was essential. Once successfully attained, Steve was soon asked to look after the southern half of the country as Divisional Director. Through the creation of a strong team and the delivery of great results to the customer, Steve was promoted to Director of Operations and then in April 2008 joined the Lloydspharmacy Board as Operations Director.

Consistently delivering success in this role led to additional Board responsibilities and his current appointment as Trading Director.
